Dog Attacks

Las Vegas Dog Bite Lawyers

Dog bites can be disfiguring, cause severe emotional and physical trauma, and in some cases result in death. Most dog attacks are preventable. Many dog attacks result from not keeping a dog on a leash, or failure to enclose the owner’s property where the dog is kept without a leash. Lax training, inadequate supervision by the owners are frequent. Animal owners are responsible for the proper training and socialization of the pets they keep on their premises. It’s well known that with proper training, dogs can be taught to behave in a safe manner around children and others.

Dog bite attorney Eric H. Woods has been successfully helping the seriously injured deal with dog bite injuries. In some cases dogs attack children going or coming from school, bicyclists or pedestrians as they go past a residence. In many cases it may be necessary for a plastic surgeon to fix the ugly scars caused by dog bites but unfortunately the damage is often more than just physical. As dog attacks can be extremely traumatic, psychological treatment may also be needed in order to aid in recovery. For more than thirty years, Eric Woods has helped his clients to receive fair and just compensation for costs related to the dog bites including medical bills, therapy bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. His legal practice is focused exclusively on personal injury cases, and he has a well-established track record of aggressively holding dog owners accountable for the actions of their animals.

Establishing Liability

In Nevada the dog bite victim needs to prove that the dog owner’s negligence led directly to injury before financial damages can be awarded.

When the owner of a home who is a dog owner behaves negligently and the dog injures for example a visitor to the home, a claim may be made against the owner of the dog and the homeowner’s insurance policy would apply. Wright v. Schum 105 Nev. 611(1989)

Clark County Municipal Code Chapter 10.16.020 generally prohibits ownership of a vicious animal, although the subsequent section allows ownership of such an animal under certain circumstances. City of Las Vegas Municipal Code also generally forbids ownership of a dangerous animal or to permit the dangerous animal to “be at large.” The City Code also has exceptions.

Las Vegas Injury Attorney Eric Woods has represented victims of serious dog bites, including children, and has obtained substantial compensation for them.

Laws surrounding dog bite claims depend in part on the city and county in which the dog bit the victim.

Under the Clark County Municipal code:

“An animal may be declared dangerous by the animal control officer if it constitutes a physical threat to human beings or to other animals and, on one or more occasions within eighteen months … It behaves menacingly to a degree that would lead a reasonable person to defend himself against substantial bodily harm; or .. It bites a person ….

An animal may be declared dangerous by the animal control officer if it constitutes a physical threat to human beings or to other animals and, without regard to any previous behavior”

“An animal may be declared vicious by the animal control officer if it constitutes a physical threat to human beings or to other animals and: it has killed or inflicted substantial harm upon a human being or other animal …”
